As of 2013: The State of Second Story Programming

Since forming in 2007, Second Story has completed programs in school settings, after-school settings, and the community at large. Now with five full years under our writing belts, we thought we’s take a look at a few of the programs we’ve successfully implemented so far.

Digital Narratives

Students draft and record fiction and non-fiction narratives using multiple modes of technology. Lessons are scaffolded to accommodate varied levels in both written expression and technological skill. Examples include:

  • CFI (IPS #2) 7th grade podcasts at Marion County Public Library Learning Curve
  • Boner Center (East 10th Street, Indianapolis) Summer Camp programming
  • SENSE Charter School 6th grade narratives

Writing Across the Curriculum

SENSE Charter School – An Adventure with The Lightning Thief.

After reading The Lightning Thief, activities included:

  • Second Story mini-lessons in place-based writing, character, setting
  • Research and reflection on local settings
  • Map-based research
  • Draft of an original myth

A Writer in the School

Second Story regularly brings writers into schools for readings and lectures. Trained teaching artists are made available to work with schools in anticipation of the author’s visit. So far, we’ve brought professional authors to the following schools:

  • Manual High School (IPS)
  • International School of Indiana
  • Snack’s Crossing (Pike)
  • Our Lady of Greenwood
  • Center for Inquiry (IPS #2)

Live Like a Real-Life Writer

Students conceive a story idea, conduct research, draft a story, and work one-on-one with an adult editor on revisions. In the end, a book is produced. This program has been successfully implemented at the following schools:

  • IPS School #15
  • SENSE Charter School
  • Center for Inquiry (IPS #2)

Teaching Artists

Second Story has recruited local writers to teach our programs in schools and community centers. In addition to some schools or centers listed above, Second Story has also offered programs at

  • Kaleidoscope Youth Center
  • Martin Luther King Community Center
  • Service Center for Contemporary Culture and Community
  • Wheeler Arts Center
  • Padua Academy
  • Christel House Academy
  • Central Catholic School
  • St. Philip Neri School
  • Holy Angels School
