Writer Night

What’s new with The Second Story?

Thursday, August 14, 2008 We've spent the summer developing program approaches and figuring out a few things for fall. One thing we've figured out is that the Murphy Art Center, where we hoped to open this fall, is up for sale. With so many things up in the air, we decided to not build out and furnish a space. So, starting this fall, our after-school programming will happen in community locations already frequented by kids and families.

Here's what else we have planned:

In-school
Beginning when ISTEP testing is over in October, we’ll begin piloting our team approach to boosting writing attitudes and abilities with an IPS fourth grade class. We are starting with fourth grade because studies show students at this age are in the final stages of deciding to either like or (too often) dislike writing. We’ll be working with a class of 20 students using our managing director and a team of 10 volunteers. Let us know if you're interested in helping.

After-school
Also in October, we’ll begin offering after-school drop-in tutoring one day per week in two community center locations already frequented by families and children. Our drop-in tutoring will provide volunteers on a one-on-one basis to help with any homework the student brings followed by fun creative-writing exercises. Let us know if you'd like to help with this, too.
