Second Story brings trained teaching teams made of writers, educators and college students into classrooms, offering supplemental creative writing instruction in small-group settings that connect with state educational standards, IPS writing curriculum requirements, and our own approaches to boosting writing attitude and creativity. In working with students at local schools, we use research-based methods offering young writers personal attention and fun activities that encourage them to form positive attitudes about writing and help them improve their skills as writers.
Our staff and volunteers accomplish this attitude shift by using fun and interactive learning approaches linked to state standards and by allowing students to choose what they write about. We also work with the students to produce tangible outcomes, such as books of student writing (like Hot Baked Cheetos and Other Things We Like About Indianapolis ), DVD recordings of performances or Web-based products like audio slideshows.
Our in-school programs can be one-day workshops or 8-10 week projects or residencies.
